Premature: warmth, rest and the power of natural wool
Share
When your baby is born prematurely, your world pauses. Instead of a maternity ward at home, you suddenly find yourself in an incubator, surrounded by beeping monitors and tubes. It's intense and emotional—you worry, perhaps feel powerless, and simultaneously face practical challenges.
Fortunately, you're not alone. Many parents have experienced this. In this blog post, we acknowledge your feelings and share loving, practical tips on how warmth, rest, and natural wool can help you care for your premature baby.
🌿 In this blog you will read:
- Why warmth and rest are so important for premature babies
- The benefits of wool and wool/silk for sensitive skin
- Why premature baby clothes are often ecru – and what we do differently
- When you can (and shouldn't) buy clothes
- Our selection of premature wool

Warmth and rest: crucial for premature babies
Warmth = safety. Premature babies can't regulate their own temperature very well. If they cool down too much, it saps the energy they need to grow.
👉 Warmth also provides peace. Babies who are cold become restless and cry more often. Extra layers or a wool blanket often help them relax immediately.
💡 Tip: Feel the nape of their neck or shoulder blades. If it feels clammy or very warm, then removing one layer is sufficient. Cold ears or mottled skin, on the other hand, means your baby is missing warmth.
All the energy your baby doesn't have to expend on staying warm can be used for growing, drinking, and sleeping. Rest and warmth go hand in hand.
The benefits of wool for sensitive premature skin
- Temperature-regulating & breathable: warm in the cold, airy in the heat.
- Moisture absorbent: absorbs up to 30% moisture without feeling clammy.
- Super soft & hypoallergenic: wool/silk is especially ideal for delicate skin.
- Natural & non-toxic: no microplastics or chemical residues.
- Self-cleaning: just airing it out is often enough.
That is why many maternity nurses recommend natural wool, including through Natural Maternity Care .
Why premature baby clothes are often ecru
In sizes 40 and 44, you'll mainly see white/ecru. This is because:
- Small print runs: brands choose basic colours for efficient production.
- Sensitive skin: fewer dyes = less chance of irritation.
- Hospital regulations: soft, neutral tones provide tranquility.
Why we do offer color variations
At Atelier de Wevershoek, we believe parents should have a choice. That's why we also offer soft colors like sesame and old rose , made with skin-friendly, GOTS- or OEKO-TEX-certified dyes.
This way, clothing remains safe, breathable and soft – but you still have something personal and special for your child.
