Why wool is also a smart choice for your little one in summer

Wool in the summer? ” Yes, indeed! At Atelier de Wevershoek we are regularly asked whether wool clothing is suitable for warmer days. Most people associate wool with winter, cold and thick layers. Yet wool – and especially wool/silk (or wool/silk/cotton mix) – is a surprisingly nice choice for your baby or toddler, especially in the summer. In this blog we explain why this is the case, and how you can use wool in a comfortable and stylish way in the warmer months. ☀️

Natural comfort, even in warm weather

Wool naturally regulates temperature . It keeps your child warm when it is cold, but also cool when it gets warmer outside. This is because wool fibres absorb moisture and ventilate at the same time. They work like a kind of thermostat: the skin stays dry and at the right temperature – without feeling clammy.

This is especially important for babies, who cannot yet regulate their own temperature. Think of your baby in a baby sling, car seat or stroller in the summer: wool (or wool/silk) creates a pleasant microclimate around the body. It prevents your little one from overheating, but at the same time keeps any breeze or draught at bay. The result is that your baby feels cozy, safe and comfortable – at home and on the go, even in warm weather.

In short, wool “works with” its environment: warm when needed, cool when possible. Ideal for those changeable summer days.

Why wool/silk and wool/silk/cotton are extra nice in the summer

For summer days we recommend light combinations such as wool/silk or wool/silk/cotton . These materials combine the best of several worlds:

  • Wool: regulates temperature and wicks away moisture. It absorbs perspiration and lets it evaporate, keeping your baby's skin dry.
  • Silk: feels silky soft 😉, softens the skin and has a slightly cooling effect. Silk is naturally cool to the touch, perfect for warmer days to prevent overheating.
  • Cotton (in the Cosilana mix): makes the fabric a bit airier, extra breathable and often a bit easier to wash. Brands like Cosilana mix a bit of cotton through their summer wool to make it thin and supple.

The result of such a mix is a thin, stretchy and ultra-soft fabric that is perfect for direct contact with the skin. Ideal for rompers, shirts, pants and rompers in the summer. You get the temperature regulation of wool, the coolness of silk and the airiness of cotton in one. In addition, these fabrics often drape beautifully smoothly around the body - not stiff or thick stuff, but almost t-shirt-like, but with all the advantages of wool.

For example, Cosilana’s summer collection has rompers in a wool/silk/cotton mix that feel thinner than many cotton rompers, but are more breathable. Many parents are surprised at how “airy” wool can be!

Wool is breathable, antibacterial and self-cleaning

Wool and wool/silk are naturally antibacterial and dirt-repellent. That means: less odors, less washing! Airing is often enough, even if your little one has sweated. Super handy when you're on vacation, on the road, or honestly - when you just don't feel like packing a new outfit every day. 😉

Where cotton can feel clammy and wet when your baby sweats or drools, wool/silk stays surprisingly dry. This makes it much more comfortable when spitting up, drooling or having a bottle accident – wool dries faster and doesn’t feel cold on the skin. It’s also kinder to sensitive baby skin : less washing = less chance of irritated skin from detergent residue. And if you do have to wash it, wool is somewhat self-cleaning and neutralizes odors thanks to lanolin. (See also our wool washing tips in our other blog.)

In the summer this means that your baby's clothes stay fresh, even if he sweats a little in the heat. And that if something does leak (think of a thin summer diaper that gives out), the wool often keeps everything inside until you can change it, without ruining the whole outfit.

Light, airy and stylish to combine

Wool/silk and wool/silk/cotton fabrics are thin, stretchy and supple. As a result, they conform to the body and allow plenty of freedom of movement – important for an active little explorer! A good base layer in the summer, such as a wool/silk romper or romper , is often sufficient on warm days.

You can easily combine such a base layer by layer :

  • Is it very warm inside? A wool/silk romper alone is enough as an outfit.
  • Is your child going outside? Combine with airy pants or leggings made of wool/cotton.
  • Is it getting chilly in the mornings or evenings? Add a thin wool/silk wrap cardigan or jacket for that extra layer.

Accessories also play a role: A wool/silk hat is ideal against draughts or for protection against the sun (the fabric has a light UV-resistant property and prevents the head from being exposed to direct sunlight), and it does not feel sweaty at all.

In terms of style: the natural look of wool/silk fabrics is beautiful. They come in beautiful, soft colours (often vegetable dyed) that you can easily mix & match. So your baby will also look very cute and comfortable in his woolens in the summer - no wet sweaty t-shirt, but a light woolen set.

Long lasting and grows with you

Wool/silk and wool blends are not only comfortable to wear, they are also stretchy and dimensionally stable . This means that the clothes often fit multiple sizes, without becoming tight or losing shape. Especially with brands like Cosilana , you see this reflected in the fit: close-fitting, but supple and flexible. This way, the garment grows with your child for a while - and often goes with it for another round to a brother, sister or a friend's child. 🥰

Concrete example: a Cosilana wool/silk romper in size 62/68 can often be worn by your baby from 3 months to 7-8 months because it stretches and returns to shape. Where a cotton romper size 68 is suddenly too short after a leap, a wool/silk romper will adapt a little and not be too small right away. That durability in use is a real advantage (it also saves you money and shopping). Plus: these fabrics often stay beautiful, pill little if you take good care of them, and thanks to the self-cleaning property you don't have to wash them as often (so they also wear out less quickly).

Sustainable and safe

The brands in our shop – such as Cosilana , Joha , Engel Natur , Hvid , Reiff, Disana – consciously choose sustainable materials . The wool is almost always organic and mulesing-free (animal welfare guaranteed) and the fabrics are free of harmful substances (no nasty dyes or chemical finishes). This means that you can put those clothes on your baby with peace of mind, even when it's warm and the pores are open. No microplastics that can aggravate sweat or allergies, but pure nature on the skin. That feels good for your child and for yourself. 🌍💚

Moreover, the idea that you invest in quality summer items that you can pass on after use or save for a next child is also sustainable. Less disposable clothing, more timeless favorites .

So in addition to the comfort aspect, you also make an environmentally conscious and safe choice with wool in the summer. Fun fact: wool is naturally flame-retardant and filters UV radiation a little, two properties that cotton has less. These are small things, but all together make wool an incredibly smart fabric - also in the summer.

Our favorite summer items in wool

A selection from our collection that is perfect for summer use (and which we ourselves love in sultry temperatures):

  • Wool/silk rompers – super breathable and ultra soft on the skin. Ideal as an underlayer or sole layer. (Brands: Engel, Joha, Cosilana)
  • Onesie – practical and comfortable daytime romper that doesn’t get too warm. Just put on 1 item and you’re done.
  • Knitted hats – protection of the head from wind or sun without sweating. Indispensable also in summer breezes or in changeable weather.
  • Leggings and pants – great for crawling and playing, better ventilation than jeans or synthetic sweatpants. Wool/cotton leggings can also be easily taken off in the morning when it gets warmer.
  • Jackets and sweaters – for the chilly morning or evening. Wool/silk cardigans are thin but provide just that little bit of warmth when the sun is gone. Much better than thick sweaters, because they can be put on/off and in the bag.
  • Blankets and sleeping bags (wool or wool/silk) – for sleeping under or taking a nap outside in the shade. Wool regulates, so a thin wool blanket or summer sleeping bag prevents your baby from waking up clammy at night, but still keeps them warm when they cool down.

In our shop you can filter on “summer” or “wool/silk” to quickly find these items, or ask us for advice.

Conclusion

Wool – and especially wool/silk or wool/silk/cotton – is an ideal choice for summer. It breathes, protects, grows with you and requires little maintenance. What more could you want? You can keep your little one comfortable and happy, without having to change outfits every time the weather changes.

At Atelier de Wevershoek you will find a carefully composed collection of natural summer favorites that will make you and your child happy. We also use these wools daily in the summer for our own kids, and we notice the difference every time: less fuss, happier children.

So the next time the thermometer rises above 25°C, don’t think: “I’ll just put wool in the back of the closet until October” – give it a try! Chances are you won’t want to do it any other way. 😎🌼

Enjoy the summer, and let those woollies enjoy it too. 🍃
